On
monday night 20th October 2008, Tuam RFC Ladies team lined out for their
first ever match, a home game against Athlone IT. They showed great character,
braving appalling conditions and putting on a fine display of rugby both
in attack and in defence.
In
the first quarter the Tuam forwards dominated, securing great lineout
ball inside Athlones twenty-two, which was taken down and driven forward
and a supurb break by Edel Durkin saw her go over the line for Tuam's
first try. Following this Athlone came back stron but a tough Tuam defence
kept them scoreless for the first half.
The
second half saw a great display of skill by Tuam's back in whick Olivia
Greaney punched through Athlone's defence to secure Tuam's second try.
Athlone never gave up and battered Tuam's defences with all they had inside
the final minutes of the game. Tuam held strong, but a powerful drive
from Athlone's forwards saw them go over the line, making the final score
10-5 to Tuam.
It
was a fantastic start to Women's Rugby in Tuam and a great team performance.
Well done to all!
