It is with great regret that Tuam RFC report the death of Bill Lyons, aged 66 in
West Sussex, England.
Bill played for London
Irish and was on the Southern Counties team that played the All Blacks
in the 80s. Moving to Tuam as manager of a factory in Ballinrobe, he quickly
established himself as a powerhouse of Tuam RFC. He played in the second
row or No.8 by preference but played as prop when the need arose. Many
a good battle was had with Ballina in the Junior Cup and one match went
3 games before Ballina emerged as victors.
The proudest day in Bill's
rugby career was when his son Tony togged out on the same first XV for
Tuam and both played together for many games. (See photo below)
Bills other loves were
shooting and fishing and when he was home he enjoyed playing the bagpipes
and smoking his pipe. Always great company, he always offered support
and assistance to anyone who approached him. He returned to England in
the 90s and died last month. He will be sorely missed and our sympathy
goes to his wife Sue and sons Tony, Nigel and James. RIP
